Illicit Frontiers: The Rise of Transnational Organized Crime in the Amazonian Borderlands of Brazil, Colombia and Peru

The event marks the launch of the report ‘Illicit Frontiers: Criminal Governance in the Amazon’s Tri-Border Region’, which examines the ways in which transnational criminal groups have expanded into the heart of the rainforest. Based on fieldwork in the main population center of the tri-border region, the twin cities of Leticia (Colombia) and Tabatinga (Brazil), the report traces the convergences between a variety of profitable illicit economies, which has led organized crime to establish permanent bases of operation in this strategic region of the Amazon. The event will also discuss policy solutions that can be implemented to address the dramatic rise in violence and the entrenchment of criminality in the tri-border region.

El webinar marca la presentación del informe "Fronteras ilícitas: Governanza Criminal en la Región de la Triple Frontera Amazónica", en el que se examinan como los grupos criminales transnacionales se han expandido hacia el corazón de la selva tropical. Basado en una investigación de campo en las ciudades de Leticia (Colombia) y Tabatinga (Brasil), el informe rastrea las convergencias entre una variedad de economías ilícitas que han llevado a la delincuencia organizada a establecer bases de operaciones permanentes en esta región estratégica de la Amazonia. En el evento también se debatirán las soluciones políticas que pueden aplicarse para hacer frente al dramático aumento de la violencia y el atrincheramiento de la criminalidad en la región trifronteriza.
