Over the last two decades, natural resource extraction in CAR has been deeply intermeshed with instability. Insurgents, militias and mercenary groups have repeatedly sought to exploit the country’s diamond and gold deposits for their own interests.
In 2013, The Kimberley Process suspended the Central African Republic, to prevent "conflict diamonds" from the country reaching international formal markets. A decade on from the initial suspension, it is clear that there have been numerous unintended consequences for CAR.
In this Webinar, Eleanor Beevor, Maxie Muwonge and Vianney Ingasso will discuss how the Kimberly Process have influenced the evolution of natural resource extraction in CAR, and how this has impacted security and political dynamics. The presentation will draw from Eleanor Beevor’s report “A blunt tool for a delicate task: The Kimberley Process and illicit markets in the Central African Republic."
The Webinar is part of a series that investigates the use of sanctions against transnational criminal organisations, and details how sectoral sanction approaches influence and shape illicit markets.
