11th UNTOC COP Side Event: Mapping illicit hubs in West Africa

A Talk by Lyes Tagziria , Mouhamadou Kane , Dr Kingsley Madueke and Lucia Bird

About this Talk

The event will showcase the findings of the illicit hub mapping initiative, a flagship project of the Observatory of Illicit Economies in West Africa (WEA-Obs) at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC), which maps the key hubs of illicit economies in 18 countries across West Africa, the Sahel and Central Africa. The findings include analysis of the Illicit Economies and Instability Monitor, an innovative metric which assesses the degree to which specific hubs of illicit economies drive instability in the region, analysing illicit economies as vectors of instability. The work of the Observatory, and the illicit hub mapping, seeks to build the evidence base to enable policy-makers to respond to differing illicit economies, drawing on the legislative framework provided by the UNTOC.
