Dr Tony Murney
Director, International Police Executive Symposium
About this speaker
Dr Tony Murney has lengthy experience of government and international organisations, having held several positions in the Australian Parliament, Australian Capital Territory Policing, the Australian Federal Police International Deployment Group, the United Nations (UN) and private consulting firms. He has undertaken three deployments to Afghanistan and two to Somalia, holding key positions including Chief Technical Adviser on Police Professionalisation in Afghanistan and Deputy Commissioner of the UN integrated Police Team in Mogadishu. He has also committed pro-bono time to civil liberties assisting refugees and is currently a Director with the International Police Executive Symposium. Tony has a PhD in anthropology and undergraduate qualifications in regional development.
Tony’s professional objectives are to share knowledge and experience of national security, stabilization, peacekeeping, phenomena labelled as terrorism and alternative sources of public order in emerging and conflict affected states. The theory and practice of international engagements in these fields have poor records of applicability and success with short comings and mistakes being repeated not only across different contexts but frequently within the same contexts and even the same missions.
