About this speaker

Ambassador Leonor Zalabata was born in the Arhuaco indigenous village: “Kwakumuke” – in Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta – Colombia. She pursued a career as an advocate for the rights of indigenous peoples in Colombia and environmental justice, and has worked to improve the political representation of the Indigenous woman/peoples.

Ambassador Zalabata was co-author of the National Guidelines for Bilingual and Intercultural Education Program for the Arhuaco People and Coordinator and Founding member of the Health Program for La Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. She has been representative to several Committees at the national level (in topics as diverse as human rights, land use and planning, environment), as well as delegate to the CBD COP and to the Permanent Forum for Indigenous Peoples.

She is the first indigenous woman appointed as Ambassador of the Colombian State.
